3.What is aluminum anodizing, in simple terms?
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that thickens and strengthens the natural oxide layer on the surface of aluminum. The extrusion is immersed in an acid electrolyte bath and an electrical current is applied. This causes oxygen ions to bond with the aluminum atoms, creating a highly durable, porous, and adherent aluminum oxide coating. This coating is not a paint or plating; it is fully integrated with the underlying metal.
4. What are the different types of anodizing?
The most common types for extrusions are:
Type II (Sulfuric Acid Anodize): The most common type. It produces a medium-thickness coating suitable for both decorative and functional applications, and it allows for a wide range of color dyes.
Type III (Hardcoat Anodize): Creates a much thicker, denser, and harder coating. It is used for extreme wear resistance, high corrosion protection, and engineering applications. It is typically darker in color and has greater dimensional change.
